“Black Theatre Workshop’s Harlem Duet”

“YouthWorks-A Promise to the Sun”
MONTRÉAL, May 15, 2012 – Black Theatre Workshop’s unique training performance program YouthWorks presents its annual spring production A Promise to the Sun by Tololwa Mollel directed by Deborah Forde, featuring 2011-2012 YouthWorks students and mentees and playing at the popular L’Espace 4001 for a limited run June 1st to 3rd 2012.

“Playwrights’ Development Showcase”
MONTREAL – March 1, 2012 – Canada is filled with many cultures and insightful stories, often left untold. This April, Black Theatre Workshop wants to cultivate these tales with the Playwrights’ Development Showcase, a continuation of last year’s successful event “Since Mama Done Got off the Couch!” This two day workshop allows writers to develop their stories with renowned Afro-Canadian playwrights including George Boyd, Pat Darbasie, ahdri zhina mandiela, Andrew Moodie, Djanet Sears, and Donna- Michelle St. Bernard and ends with a Showcase by local professional actors Tamara Brown, Tristan D. Lalla, Julie Tamiko Manning and Jimmy Blais. The event is on April 15th and 16th 2012 for writers of all backgrounds and ends on April 16th with a public Showcase at 7:30 p.m. The event will be at Black Theatre Workshop – 3680 Jeanne-Mance.

“New Canadian Kid”
MONTREAL January 23 2012 – In a recent Canadian report, 41% of all students in grades 4 to 7 reported that they were victims of bullying and/or bullied others – This February, Black Theatre Workshop brings this issue to light in its 2012 Black History Month School Tour production of New Canadian Kid by Dennis Foon. Directed by Liz Valdez and starring many of Montreal’s finest actors including Stori Ya’s Warona Setshwaelo, New Canadian Kid tours schools throughout the month of February, with a public performance on February 25th 2012, 2 p.m. at Concordia University’s F.C. Smith Auditorium at 2 p.m.

“Vision 2012″
MONTREAL January 5, 2012– From The Young and the Restless to the ReelWorld Film Festival – Tonya Lee Williams revolutionized the Canadian entertainment industry. This January, help Black Theatre Workshop [BTW] pay tribute to Ms. Tonya Lee Williams with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award at BTW’s 26th Annual Vision Celebration Gala. Williams is founder of the ReelWorld Film Festival, and is a principal on The Young and the Restless for over 20 years. BTW’s Vision Gala is on January 28th, 2012 at La Plaza Holiday Inn Midtown Montreal, cocktails at 5:30 pm, dinner at 6:30 pm, dancing and entertainment until the wee hours of the night.

“Stori Ya”
MONTREAL – September 19, 2011 – The world’s economy is changing, people are losing their homes. What if it happened to you? Black Theatre Workshop presents its 41st season Mainstage production Stori Ya by Joan M. Kivanda, directed by Millie Tresierra and starring Warona Setshwaelo in her BTW Mainstage theatre debut. “Birthday Baccanal”
Come celebrate Black Theatre Workshop’s successful 40th anniversary season and make a toast to BTW’s former Artistic Director Tyrone Benskin at BTW’s Birthday Bacchanal – featuring complimentary rum, rum tastings, wine tastings, Caribbean inspired food, live music and best of all live scenes by local actors in the community – and a special tribute presentation to Tyrone Benskin. MONTREAL April 6- 2011 “Since Mama Done Got Off the Couch!” Mama has been off the couch and exploring the world for a long time now and Black Theatre Workshop is ready to share those stories with you. On May 27th and 28th 2011, in partnership with Concordia University, for the first time ever in Montreal, Black Theatre Workshop Presents “Since Mama Done Got Off the Couch!” – an interactive playwrights conference discussing the evolution of Afro-Canadian theatre.

2011 Black History Month School Tour
Dutchman by Amiri Baraka A.K.A LeRoi Jones
MONTREAL February 9, 2011 – Dutchman by Amiri Baraka earned a special place in American history when first presented in 1960s New York. It coincided with the escalation of the civil rights movement and made Baraka renowned, respected and hated. Baraka used writing as a weapon of action to inform and spur change in the black community and America during a time of rebirth and the fight for civil rights.

25th Annual Vision Gala Celebration
MONTREAL January 11, 2011 – Join us as we pay tribute to Mr. Doudou Boicel for carving Montreal into a leading jazz international centre. This year’s 25th Annual Vision Gala Awards Celebration honours Mr. Boicel with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award. Mr. Boicel initiated the jazz revival with the slogan “Jazz is Not Dead”.

A Raisin in the Sun

MONTREAL, Sept. 28 2010 – Lorraine Hansberry borrowed this line as not only the title but also the core of her story “A Raisin in the Sun”. In her play Hansberry creates some of the most powerful images in theatrical Literature, drawing on some of the more charged topics of her time; the black experience and the American Dream.

Discovery Series Consecrated Ground
MONTREAL, April 29, 2010 – Africville, Nova Scotia, built over generations, destroyed in one day. Black Theatre Workshop presents its Discovery Series reading of Consecrated Ground by George Boyd, based on true events. This Governor General Award nominated play will be a staged reading by professional actors directed by Tyrone Benskin, and presented on May 17th at 7:30 p.m. at Mai Café, 3680 Jeanne-Mance.
