The Writers Circle:

The goal of The Writer’s Circle is to support emerging writers through the play writing process from idea to the completion of a second draft. Writers are welcomed to start with just an idea or a previous work they wish to continue developing. Participation is limited to 10 writers.

Calendar: The group will start in October, 2013 and run until May 2014, with meeting every two weeks with an extended winter holiday break.

Activities: In addition to the activities listed below, YouthWorks staff will provide exercises and readings to assist in the writing process.

Week 1: :  Pitch meeting

All writers prepare a rough outline of their play to present to the group along with the answers to the following questions:

  • What do you want your dramaturgical team to focus on during development?
  • How best can the group support your work?

Meeting 2: Baseline character and play map

  • What do you see as the trough line of your story and what secondary story-lines feed in and how?
  • Who are the people/characters that inhabit your written world?

Meeting 3: Dramaturgical feedback on your first scene

Meeting 4: Dramaturgical feedback your work in progress

Meeting 5: Submission of your rough draft

Meeting 6: Cold reads of selected text by YouthWorks A.I.R participants.

Meeting 7: Staged reading of selected play by YouthWorks HeadStart students

Meeting 8: Dramaturgical feedback on rough draft distributed.

Meeting 9: Clean rough due.

Meeting 10: Dramaturgical feedback on first draft

Meeting 13: TBD

Meeting 14: First draft due

Meeting 15: Readings

While not guaranteed, plays that fall within the pedagogical and performance needs of YouthWorks may be selected for public performance as the end of session YouthWorks production.

Fee: $25.00

To Apply: Submit a letter of intent stating why you feel being a member of a circle would be beneficial for you, and what you can bring to the process to support other writers. Your letter should be received no later than September 27, 2013. You may submit by email or snail mail.
