Black Theatre Workshop

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

YouthWorks has been privileged to foster the talents of people from all ages, colours, and sizes but still we find ourselves being asked some of the same questions.  Here are some quick and easy answers to some of the most popular questions when considering joining the YouthWorks family.

Do I have to be Black to participate in the program?

Nope! Whatever your background may be, culturally or artistically, there is a place for you at YouthWorks. You just have to be yourself; if you are someone who is open to new experiences, to Black arts and culture, then you are exactly who we are looking for.

How much experience do I need to have to participate?

It depends on the session. At YouthWorks we offer multi-level training, so whether you’re a beginner or about to launch your professional career, YouthWorks offers group workshops, individual coaching, and individualized mentorship programs to meet your needs.

But what if I’m really shy?

First of all: you’re not alone!

You’d be surprised how many artists and performers are shy. In fact, it’s been said that experienced performers are simply those who learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.

The YouthWorks experience is about community, respect, and trust. We strive to create and maintain an environment where everyone involved feels safe enough to take creative risks, and to try new things. Judgment and mockery must be left outside the door. Everyone involved in the workshops (including the instructors!) is in the same boat; we all have to be allowed to look silly sometimes.

It’s easy to feel as though if we “make a mistake,” that it’s the end of the world. But an important part of the creative process is discovering for oneself what works and what doesn’t. So often our society shuts down the voices of its youth; but at YouthWorks we actively encourage and promote freedom of expression, we do not censor our students. Time and time again, we have seen that when youth are given the chance to truly express themselves, what surfaces is work that shows depth, wisdom, insight, and beauty. But you can’t get to that place unless you’re willing to take the first step. Try it, you just might surprise yourself!

Will I get to be in movies after?

We don’t promise to make you the next Hannah Montana. YouthWorks isn’t a casting agency, it’s a school. Unlike what we may see in the movies or on television, there are no shortcuts to gaining skill and experience. We believe that the journey can be just as rewarding as the destination. At YouthWorks, we teach you the skills that you need to be able to reach the next level in your own journey. Whether you are just starting out, or on the verge of beginning a professional career, or a professional looking to add new skills to your arsenal, we can help you take the next step.
